An act of goodness

One of the girls receiving the keys from the mayor.

I’ve been reading newspapers this morning, well more like 13:00 hours, but that’s still morning to me. No, I don’t sleep till then, but I stay in bed doing work over the Net, till I get too hungry to ignore it. But that’s not the point.

There was an article talking about an act of goodness which touched my heart and made me think. An anonymous couple has given an apartment as a gift to a neglected kids’ institution to be used by orphan kids between the ages of 18 and 21. They have to leave the home when they turn 18, and in this way they have a few years for saving up money, getting a proper job training and learning how to live on their own, while still having the support of the institution.

The couple had done it because they lost a girl of their own, and they wanted to remain anonymous, which just adds to the nobility of the act. The apartment in question is worth about 50 000 €.

I was wondering…why is it that we can fully give only when we are faced with a loss, and only in the depths of misfortune can we fully appreciate the goodness we receive. I think we should devote some thought every day to the fortune that was given to us, and how we could best help other people by sharing either are time, our talents or any other portion of our wealth.
